Any business can use dashboards. They allow managers to quickly grasp business status by viewing essential measures of business success presented in the forms of charts, tables and performance dials.

The first step in determining how dashboards can assist your managing is to review how you measure your success. Ask yourself: What contributes to the success of your business? These measures, or Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), indicate the status of different activities.

Most businesses already have KPIs defined. You may not call them by that name but you know the “numbers” that will make your business successful. You also know what goes into generating those numbers – all of the activities and processes and materials that are needed to make the numbers. What your numbers measure are your KPIs.

Key Performance Indicators for your business may be similar to those of other business owners in the same industry. Or your KPIs may be unique to your special interests. For example, construction companies may track and display the number of projects, their level of completion and the number of workers in total and on each project. However, only one company may want to track projects using a specific building material.

In addition, different departments or functions within a company may have their own KPIs. For example, the sales and marketing function of the construction company may track the number of new projects generated by specific ads.
