HEALTHCARE

From a business perspective, the health care category encompasses various specific activities. These range from quick office visits to lengthy surgeries, and from food service operations to extended care stays in specially designed facilities. Each activity should be measured, monitored and managed using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

The range of health care activities and types of facilities mean that there are similarities to other types of businesses.

Medical offices are affected by some of the same issues as those impacting other professionals – last minute visits, broken appointments, emergency calls, scheduling difficulties, etc. Hospital and nursing home food services facilities have much in common with restaurants and catering businesses.

Administrators and department managers need to know the status of KPIs for their areas of responsibility. Dashboards can be set to alert them to areas where additional attention is necessary. For example, a health care facility administrator will have greater interest in fund-raising status and in the number of beds filled, than would a doctor in charge of a specific department.

However, both the administrator and the department head need the capability to quickly obtain key measures of performance for their areas. Dashboards provide these.

Some issues that various health care operations may wish to track include:

  • Appointments per day per doctor.
  • Length of appointment.
  • Patient waiting time.
  • Staffing of various departments.
  • Accounts receivable.
  • Cash flow trends.
  • Medical procedures by type.
  • Beds/rooms available.
  • Food service users.
  • Per plate food costs.

Key Performance Indicators, such as the ones listed above, and the tables, charts and performance dials used to display the information, can be selected and customized for an administrator, specific department chief or other medical professional.

General data relevant to the entire operation can be displayed in visual form. In addition, Dashboard Programs also can show data relevant for a specific department or activity. Examples of this specific information include employee data, participation in incentive plans, and fund raising activities.

Every health care operation can use dashboards. Find out the benefits to your specific health care business and how to obtain a Dashboards Program by contacting the dashboard experts at George S. May International Company.
